EDGY: The Railway Cabaret

Featuring the Suitcase Ensemble and special guests China Pearl, Sound Tracks, Insanity Hurts, Rebecca Joy Sharp, and The Railfan Three

Saturday 23 April 2011, 4pm & 8pm

This was a contemporary music hall celebrating life in Liverpool's Edge Hill: home of the oldest passenger railway station in the world. The event was put on as part of the Working Class Life and Music Festival 2011.

In eighteen hundred and forty-one
My corduroy britches I put on
I put my corduroy britches on
To work upon the railway

Edgy is a hugely entertaining and though provoking anthology of music, theatre, poetry and comedy, inspired and influenced by the music and stories of local working communities.

This special edition of Edgy saw the return of The Suitcase Ensemble's particular blend of quirky theatricality, poignancy and absurd humour and for the first time they were joined by a diverse array of guest artists. The full line up of the event was as follows:

Sound Tracks - Edge Hill Archive
Metal's Edge Hill Archive is playfully interpreted as a theatrical mini-epic by twenty performers as part of Sound Tracks: an open access performance project run by The Suitcase Ensemble at Edge Hill Station.

China Pearl
A brand new specially choreographed piece from this Liverpool-based Chinese dance company, inspired by Edge Hill Station.

The Suitcase Ensemble - Working on The Railway
The Suitcase Ensemble's boisterous and provocative reflection on the working history of the railways, featuring their distinctive renditions of railway folk songs.

Rebecca Joy Sharp - The Ballad of Juniper Davy and Sonny Lumiere
Live harp and spoken word telling a magical tale of invention and industry, hide and seek, love, mischief and dark imaginings.

The Suitcase Ensemble - Look at us Then
Poignant and absurd contemplations on the heritage of the area, including artworks by Jane Hughes, inspiration from the Edge Hill Archive and extracts from The Suitcase Ensemble's raucous new show 'Look at us Now'.

Insanity Hurts
Liverpool's newest rap duo present their compelling fusion of hip-hop and storytelling with politics, passion, humour and street-level observations of life.

The Suitcase Ensemble - Lost in an Edgy Cabaret
With a unique blend of folk, punk, music hall, theatre, poetry and contemporary dance, The Suitcase Ensemble conclude the show with a set of classic Edgy songs.

The event was compered by curious newcomers the Railfan Three (Holly Wilson-Guy, Alice Bunker-Whitney, and Harriet Leah Preston) who also provided sporadic comic surprises in the foyer before the show.

Venue: Platform 1, Edge Hill Station, Tunnel Road, Liverpool L7 6ND
